It seems like chaos is swirling in an innocuous lethargy, or maybe it is so fast that it is impossible to comprehend, an approaching cyclone, its outer bands already devastating shapes, spaces and lives, unformed, unbounded and unnamed. And in its one clouded eye, reason is crying.

Chaos is the universe fixing herself, brushing the crumbs from her gown, clotting her bleeding lacerations, braiding her unkempt hair, steadying her racing heart.

Is the denial of impending doom our way of coping with the decaying now? How long will we pluck metaphors from nature, Marcus, to reassure ourselves that the laws have been tested and that they work…spring will follow winter, day will replace night and no matter what leaves, the waves will always return to our shore?

As long as we remember that it is our faith that’s holding up the sky.

o moon,
fading is not healing

  1. “And in its one clouded eye, reason is crying.” “Fading is not healing,” In between these I myself eroded. The paradox is that despite the basis of metaphor becoming shakier, I must believe the sun will rise over my own little planet. I must believe that our actions can make a difference. And now I’m thinking of chaos circling its prey.

    1. Maybe sometimes that unassailable faith we harbour makes us see things far better than they really are..a false glimmer. Maybe! Thanks so much Susan.

      1. And now I’m trying to find an argument to prove a false glimmer might be better than none. I am sorry to say that it eludes me.

        1. I do believe the good fight must be fought, at all costs. However faith in good and right needs the backing of facts and consequences as well..in a very complex world. I think we cannot cherry pick our battles, though we may be left with no other choice sometimes.

  2. Really? Are we so strong that our faith holds up the sky? I’ll have to think about that. Meanwhile, the sky stays put! 😉

  3. the haibun reminds me of the Ganga, in her continuous flow it breathes devastation and growth…& specially love the second paragraph and of course the end haiku as always…”silver scar on the cheek of night,” Wow!

  4. Wow. There is such depth in this. Made me think of impending doom, question really if Spring will always follow winter. But for now, these cycles are the little evidence I have. If faith holds up the sky, it is something I must nurture, not let it fade. I think you wrote something very strong and valuable here.

  5. Yes — the sort of faith which is the patient certainty that “the universe fixing herself, brushing the crumbs from her gown, clotting her bleeding lacerations, braiding her unkempt hair, steadying her racing heart.” Amen.
